Take Action Now

Choose your presidential preference!

Take part in the party (caucuses) Feb. 9!

While legislators in Olympia debate education priorities such as class size and salaries, presidential candidates are crisscrossing the country in search of primary votes and caucus support.

In Washington, the Republican and Democratic caucuses are Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. They're open to registered voters. A list of Republican caucus locations is here, and you can find Democratic caucuses here.

The main purpose of the 2008 caucuses is to select presidential delegates, who help determine each party's presidential nominee. The races may still be undecided by Feb. 9. Learn where the candidates stand on education issues by reading these National Education Association comparisons: Republican or Democratic. (By law, these documents are for WEA members only, not the public.)

Your neighborhood caucuses are also a good chance to build support in Olympia for reducing class sizes and improving educators' salaries. If you see your local legislators at your caucus, urge them to support these priorities.

Remember, participating in the democratic process is an important part of our civic responsibility as educators.

Help us select our next Republican president!

Attend your neighborhood’s precinct caucus

Saturday, February 9, 2008 – 1:00 p.m.

The precinct caucus is the first step in selecting our next Republican president. At precinct caucuses around the state neighbors will gather to discuss issues and elect delegates who will help select our Republican presidential nominee. You must be present at your precinct caucus to participate in the process and make sure you have a say in choosing our Republican candidate for president.

HOW DO I FIND MY CAUCUS LOCATION?

Find your county in the list of counties which follows below. Click on the link for your county to be directed to your county Republican Party’s website, where you will find easy-to-follow instructions to determine your precinct caucus location. For those county parties without a website, the link will take you to contact info for your county party office, or a list of precinct caucus locations for that county.

WHERE DO I GO FOR MORE INFORMATION?

Click here to download the WSRP’s “From Caucus to Convention” pamphlet, which includes a basic explanation of the 2008 Republican precinct caucus process, a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and important dates for your calendar.

Weekday's pick from the Gardening Archive
This episode is from The Art of Pruning, from January 26, 2005. Carl takes Steve to task for being such a haphazard pruner of trees. Then he takes your calls on transplanting trees and shrubs, feeding and bedding worms in the worm bin and dealing with vine weevils and their larvae. You will find any accompanying gardening notes online. Enjoy!

We are bringing you past programs with Carl Elliott, our now retired Radio Gardener, exclusively on the Web and as a Podcast. Carl Elliott was a part of Weekday's gardening coverage for more than 10 years. He shared his knowledge on gardening the organic way.

Washington State Department of Transportation - Truck and Freight System Alert
January 30, 2008

Interstate 90 Closed in both directions over Snoqualmie Pass

Westbound traffic is stopped at milepost 106 near Ellensburg due to a natural slide that occurred earlier blocking the westbound lanes at milepost 51. The eastbound lanes are closed at milepost 34 near North Bend due to worsening snow conditions. Because the westbound lanes are blocked, snow removal equipment cannot make the necessary circuits to keep the eastbound lanes open.

This is closure is estimated to last until early Thursday morning due to the amount of material and debris at road level. Updated information will be provided as details become available.

The Washington State Department of Transportation provides this information as a public service. It is based on currently available information. Motorists are reminded that weather and road conditions can change rapidly and should plan accordingly. For current traveler information, please visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic or call 5-1-1

Weather Forecast

$storyimg.altText   Updated Thursday January 31, 2008

We're back to a regular pattern of valley rain and mountain snow today.  Look for highs in the mid 40s and showers at times.  The snow level will stay above 1500 feet.   Another one to two feet of snow is expected in the Cascades over the next 24 hours... so travel will be difficult over the mountain passes.

Healthy-Pancake Tuesday
By Melissa Breyer, Senior Producer, Care2 Green Living

Did you know that Mardi Gras is also known as Fat Tuesday, as well as Shrove Tuesday and Pancake Tuesday?!! Pancake Tuesday is the way they top off carnival season in the United Kingdom and we think it's a glorious idea. And although, yes, the main motif of Mardi Gras is indulgence before fasting, we have decided we'll indulge in some healthy pancakes that taste no less decadent. Read on for our secret for light and sweet, whole grain pancakes.

Cool Beans: Go Heirloom
By Melissa Breyer, Senior Producer, Care2 Green Living

When it comes to beans we all know black, pinto, and navy, but what about Red Nightfall, Jackson Wonder, Black Valentine or Butterscotch Calypso? These are the kinds of beans you want to write love songs for. And these are the kinds of beans I want to eat. Yes I'm a pushover for evocative names, and yes these varieties are easy on the eye. But more importantly they are heirloom beans that not only boast a boost of flavor, but play an important role in plant diversity and agricultural heritage.

Orange and Bourbon Baked Beans
Adapted from Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker, by Robin Robertson (The Harvard Common Press, 2004).

Celebrate Mardi Gras with these bourbon-touched beans. What better connection to the flavor of the event if you can't be on Bourbon Street to watch the parade? Citrus orange adds just the right zing for deep winter, making Orange and Bourbon Baked Beans sophisticated and fun for the Super Bowl too.
